Early Neurological Stimulation ("The SUPER DOG protocoL")

What it is and how it is done

First Developed by the US Military (at Lackland AFB), Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) was then called "The Super Dog Protocol".  It was developed to improve the performance of military working dogs--from puppyhood.  It starts at 3 days of age, and continues through day 16.

The Breeder handles each puppy--one at a time--while performing 5 exercises--in the following order.  This is done only one time per day, and each exercise should take no more than 5 seconds, or 25 seconds total for each puppy.

First exercise:  Tactile:  Holding the pup in one hand, the Breeder stimulates the puppy between the toes of any one foot--using a Q-tip for 3-5 seconds.

Second exercise:  Head Held Erect:  Using both hands, the puppy is held straight up--head directly above the tail for 3-5 seconds.

Third exercise:  Head Pointed Down:  Holding the puppy firmly with both hands, the head is reversed pointing downward tail--directly above the head for 3-5 seconds.

Fourth exercise:  Supine Position:  Hold the puppy so that its back is resting in the palms of both hands--with muzzle facing the ceiling for 3-5 seconds.  (It doesn't matter if the puppy is awake or asleep).

Fifth exercise:  Thermal Stimulation:  Use a damp hand towel that has been chilled in the refrigerator for 5-10 minutes.  Place the puppy on the towel, feet down for 3-5 seconds.  Do Not restrain the puppy from moving.

(These exercises are not a substitute for careful daily handling and stroking of young puppies).

What are the Benefits?

Five Physical Benefits have been observed in canines exposed to ENS:

* Improved cardio vascular performance (slower heart rate)

*Stronger heart beats

*Stronger adrenal glands

*More tolerance to stressors

*Greater disease resistance

In Learning Tests, puppies exposed to ENS were:

*More active and exploratory

*More adaptable to changes in their environment

*Exhibiting a calm and stable temperament.
